Résumé
Education about sexual consent has proliferated in the past decade and become the most popular method of preventing gender-based violence. In 2015, in Ontario, Canada, the provincial government introduced the topic of consent to the updated Health and Physical Education curriculum—where sexuality education is housed—and was met with a group of small but vocal public protesters. The placards dissenters held, which read things like “Teaching ‘Consent’! Did you get ours?”, demonstrated how some parents and concerned community members thought consent was too mature of a topic to be discussed with children and youth. This presentation will argue for the importance of teaching about consent in state-mandated sexuality education, and moreover, that consent education must be further developed to incorporate an anti-oppressive framework. I will discuss how talking to students about the pervasiveness of sexual trauma, and the ways it intersects with other systemic trauma (i.e. racism, ableism), is crucial for promoting critically-thinking citizens who can challenge rape culture. I will examine some of the considerations needed to respect diverse cultural perspectives while still ensuring students get information to reduce sexual harms and promote mutual, ethical sexual relations.
